As everyone is these days I guess, I am trying to eat healthier. However, as a lover of food, especially the decadent kind, this is difficult! Another thing I love? Burgers. Lately I have been figuring out ways to use ground turkey instead of ground beef and I think I have come up with some good ones. Here is my turkey burger recipe. These burgers are really flavorful and you won't even miss the fat!

Turkey Burgers

1 lb ground turkey breast
1/2 of a red bell pepper
1/2 of a sweet onion
1 tbsp chili powder
1 tbsp adobo powder
1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 tsp garlic powder
salt and pepper
4 slices of white cheddar (optional)
4 whole wheat burger buns
sliced avocado (optional)

Chop the peppers and the onions and saute them over medium high heat with some olive oil (about 8 minutes)and then let cool for a couple of minutes. Meanwhile, combine the ground turkey with the chili powder, adobo, worcestershire, garlic powder, and the salt and pepper. Mix well with your hands or a fork. Add the peppers and onions to the meat mixture and then divide into fourths.

Heat a large skillet over medium high heat with just enough olive oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Shape the burgers into patties and make a small indentation in the middle (to avoid the center from rising up too much). Add the patties to the pan and cook for about 2 minutes on the first side or until golden brown with a nice crust. Flip the burgers over and cook for another 2-3 minutes with a lid on the pan (this helps ensure the inside is cooked through but the burgers remain juicy). During the last minute of cooking you can top the burgers with the cheese slices, keep the lid on for beautiful melting. Then top with whatever you like...I used avocado slices and lettuce but be creative!
